An arrest has been made in connection with the stray-bullet shooting of a nine-year-old boy in Lauderhill on Memorial Day, police said.
Jeremy Lockhart, 53, was charged with possession of a weapon by a convicted felon as well as felony violation of his probation, Lauderhill Police Lt. Antonio Gonzalez said in a press release.
The shooting was preceded by an argument in a parking lot near 1531 North State Road 7 around 10:45 a.m. Monday. The argument led to multiple people firing gunshots and the boy suffering a non-life-threatening wound to his right ankle, Gonzalez said.
The boy and his family were not involved in the argument, Gonzalez said and were not targeted in the shooting.
Detectives were still investigating whether Lockhart fired the weapon that was in his possession, police said. Lockhart was in custody at the Broward County Main Jail Tuesday morning.
Detectives were also working Tuesday to identify a person inside a white Toyota Prius who was involved in the argument, as well as how many of the people involved in the argument fired shots, Gonzalez said.
Detectives determined that people in three vehicles were involved in the argument: the Prius, a white Chevrolet SUV, and a black Chevrolet SUV, Gonzalez said.
The female driver of the black Chevrolet SUV returned to the crime scene after the shooting and is cooperating with detectives, according to police.
Police said the child was taken to Broward Health Medical Center in Fort Lauderdale for treatment and released the same day.
Police did not say what led to the argument.
Anyone with information about the case is asked to immediately call the Lauderhill Police Department at 954-497-4700 or Broward County Crime Stoppers at 954-493-8477 (TIPS)
