Yahaira Lydia Melendez {BSO}
A woman was arrested after multiple 911 calls led deputies to discover she had assaulted and abused a teen girl with whom she had engaged in an illegal sexual relationship.
According to Broward County Sheriff’s Office arrest records, Yahaira Lydia Melendez, 28, was taken into custody on December 26 and charged with child abuse without significant bodily harm and sexual battery by a person 24 years of age or older on a victim who is 16 or 17, records show.
According to records, deputies responded around 1:48 a.m. to multiple 911 calls reporting a woman screaming and being chased near the 4500 block of Northwest 48th Terrace. Callers reported seeing a woman wearing a pink jacket and shorts being pursued by another individual, possibly attacking them with a bottle of some sort.
Deputies located a gold Toyota believed to be involved and conducted a traffic stop nearby. Inside the vehicle were Melendez and a visibly upset 17-year-old girl, who investigators later identified as the victim.
Deputies separated the two, and the teen told officers she and Melendez had been in a dating relationship for approximately three weeks, during which multiple violent incidents had occurred.
The teen told deputies that just before law enforcement arrived, Melendez struck her multiple times in the head with a closed fist and threatened to cause further harm.
The victim also reported a prior battery incident in Oakland Park days earlier, during which she said Melendez threatened her to deny the abuse or face worse harm.
Melendez was arrested and transported to the Broward County Jail.
