Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu held talks in Jerusalem Monday with a U.S. congressional delegation that included Congresswoman Sheila Cherfilus-McCormick.
The bipartisan delegation, led by U.S. Rep. Mike Lawler (R-NY), voiced support for Israel as its military renews its campaign against Hamas terrorists in Gaza, where 58 hostages are still being held by the U.S. and E.U. designated terrorist group.
The Jewish state has been at war with Hamas since the organization’s Oct. 7, 2023, surprise invasion that killed some 1,200 people.
“Today, I had the pleasure to be part of a very productive and hopeful conversation with Prime Minister Netanyahu on behalf of our bipartisan Congressional delegation,” Cherfilus-McCormick said in an Instagram post Monday night. “We remain committed and relentless in the pursuit [to] bring every hostage home, ensure aid reaches Gaza and protect the security of all.”
Netanyahu’s office posted a photo of the prime minister flanked by Cherfilus-McCormick, Lawler, and U.S. Rep. Michael McCaul (R-Texas). Another post from Netanyahu’s office showed him meeting with a small group of lawmakers that included Cherfilus-McCormick.
“U.S. Rep. Lawler said that the Prime Minister’s vigorous and determined policy during the war has changed the Middle East and turned it into a safer place,” Netanyahu’s office said in a statement after the meeting. “The Prime Minister said that he appreciates their steadfast and unwavering support for the State of Israel and its just war.”
Cherfilus-McCormick, a lawyer elected to the U.S. House of Representatives in 2022, won reelection last November. Her district includes Tamarac and parts of Broward and Palm Beach County.
The Democratic congresswoman has been a vocal supporter of Israel in the House, where she sits on the House Foreign Affairs Committee.
Following Hamas’s October 2023 attacks on Israel, Cherfilus-McCormick issued a statement condemning the violence as “immoral, inhumane, despicable, and unprovoked.” She emphasized her commitment to ensuring Israel has the necessary resources to defend itself and provide security for its people.
Cherfilus-McCormick also welcomed the November 2023 U.S.-brokered deal between Israel and Hamas, which aimed to free hostages and provide humanitarian aid to Gaza.
In April 2024, after Iran launched a large-scale missile attack against Israel, Cherfilus-McCormick reiterated the United States’ support for Israel’s right to self-defense and lauded Israeli defensive anti-missile technologies.
The congresswoman also co-led a bipartisan effort urging UN Women to condemn Hamas for its attacks on women October 7, when terrorists systematically used rape and sexual assault as a weapon of war, according to the U.S. and Israel.
Raised in an evangelical Christian household, Cherfilus-McCormick has said her support for Israel is deeply rooted in her upbringing. She has made several trips to the country and in 2022 visited Israel’s Holocaust museum, Yad Vashem.
