Broward Sheriff’s Office traffic homicide detectives are investigating a two-vehicle crash involving a Tamarac woman that left a 73-year-old man dead.
According to investigators, the crash happened shortly after 8:29 a.m. on Thursday, Oct. 30, at South State Road 7 and Southwest 17th Street in North Lauderdale.
Detectives said Jean Jonas Vixamar, 73, of North Lauderdale, was driving a 2009 Toyota Camry and was stopped in the northbound left-turn lane of State Road 7 with his rear tire on the median. At the same time, 43-year-old Tamarac resident Kimmair Lowery was driving a 2021 Honda Accord north on State Road 7 and maneuvered around the Camry into the left-turn lane, authorities said.
According to BSO, Vixamar’s Camry was stopped at a red light waiting to make a U-turn when it began slowly moving forward, striking the rear of Lowery’s Accord. The Accord then shifted into the left through-lane while the Camry continued rolling slowly until it came to a stop against the median on the north side of the intersection, authorities said.
Broward Sheriff’s Office Fire Rescue responded and rushed Vixamar to a nearby hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
Detectives believe Vixamar may have suffered a medical episode before the crash. Neither excessive speed nor driver impairment are considered contributing factors in the crash, authorities said.
The investigation is ongoing, according to BSO.
