A 53-year-old man was struck and killed while walking in North Lauderdale on Dec. 18, authorities said.
Enrique Alonso, 53, of Southwest Seventh Place in North Lauderdale, was attempting to cross North State Road 7 from west to east—without using a designated crosswalk—when a 2007 Buick Lacrosse hit him around 7:20 p.m. in the 5400 block, according to detectives with the Broward Sheriff’s Office Traffic Homicide Unit.
A preliminary investigation revealed that Doris Dudley, 76, the LaCrosse’s driver, was traveling south on North State Road 7 in the far left lane when the car’s front passenger side struck Alonso, propelling him up the hood of the car and into the windshield, detectives said. As Dudley applied the brakes, Alonso was thrown south and came to a final rest in the roadway, according to BSO.
BSO deputies and North Lauderdale Fire Rescue responded to the scene. Alonso was rushed to Broward Health Medical Center, where he was later pronounced dead, according to BSO.
Dudley, of Lauderdale Lakes, remained at the scene, and neither excessive speed nor impairment are considered factors in the crash, detectives said.
BSO’s investigation into the crash is ongoing.
