Alleged Murder-for-Hire Plot Over Failed Cell Phone Deal Leads to Arrest in Tamarac 5

A man, who was wanted for attempting to hire a hitman to kill his business partner, was arrested in Tamarac after law enforcement received information that he was in the area.

According to an arrest affidavit filed by the Broward County Sheriff’s Office, Roland Cameron McBarnette, 42, of North Lauderdale, was charged with criminal solicitation to murder, allegedly trying to pay a friend to kill a man over a business deal gone bad involving cell phones.

Detectives say that on October 10, McBarnette met with a man at his home on East Glen Oak Road in North Lauderdale. The affidavit states that during their conversation, McBarnette complained about being owed money from a failed business arrangement and allegedly told the man he wanted the other man involved “killed over the incident.”

McBarnette allegedly told the man that a mentor quoted him $3,500 to $4,000 for the killing, and asked if he would do it for less.

After the man reportedly refused, saying he was not a killer, investigators say McBarnette then took photos of personal information, including driver’s licenses and addresses belonging to the intended victim and his girlfriend, telling him that the information was for anyone willing to take the job.

A week later, McBarnette allegedly brought up the murder again, telling his friend that he was traveling to Tampa to meet someone who would do it for less money. Concerned that McBarnette was actually serious, the man later contacted the police.

Detectives interviewed both the intended victim and his girlfriend, who confirmed parts of the story and turned over photos found on McBarnette’s phone that matched the informant’s account.

Based on the evidence, BSO obtained a warrant for McBarnette’s arrest on October 29.

On October 30, informants provided information that led to McBarnette’s arrest near University Drive and Commercial Boulevard. He was arrested and booked into the Broward County Jail. He was later released after posting a $100,000 bond.
